AMERICA’S FISHING PARADOX
I produced, wrote, shot, edited, and hosted this video for Vox.com
I rode on top of a truck with some folks from Connecticut wildlife as they went on a fish stocking run. In less than an hour we threw (literally threw) 675 fish into a river for people to catch. These were fish they bred in hatcheries at great expense, just for people to fish back out.
Introducing non-native fish can wreak havoc on an ecosystem. So why are state wildlife agencies doing it?
I investigated the strange paradox that incentivizes states to do something that, at least in some cases, hurts the very ecosystem they’re trying to conserve. This video explores the complicated question of fish stocking in the US, examines the possible dangers to ecosystems, and shines a light on potential conservation benefits.
