When I studied medieval history in undergrad, all my friends made fun of me. They said it doesn't matter to the modern world. Well, Pete Hegseth disagrees. And his crusade-inspired tattoos and fascination with the 11th century Holy Wars could have a huge impact on US foreign policy and the current war in Iran.

This is a story I've been tracking for a long time, so I'm very excited and proud to finally have it out in the world for Vox.
